Paws and Whiskers: A Non-Profit Founder's Journey from Dogs to Cats

In the world of animal rescue, compassion knows no bounds. Read up on my journey that began with a focus on dogs but took an unexpected turn towards our feline friends. This is the inspiring tale of how I recognized the urgent need to extend a helping hand to cats, who, despite their prevalence, often find themselves with limited rescues and even fewer resources.

The Canine Beginning:

My story began when I embarked on a mission to make a difference in the lives of stray and abandoned dogs that had landed in our California shelters. I established a non-profit animal rescue after the adoption of my dog Boomer who was in a shelter for 4 years, led me to realize there was a need for additional help to animals in need. I was dedicated to providing a safe haven for dogs, nursing them back to health, and finding them loving forever homes. The organization gained momentum, and my tireless efforts earned the reputation of a compassionate advocate for our four-legged companions.

The Feline Revelation:
While in the throws of rescue, I began to notice a gap in the rescue community – a void that extended to the world of cats. Despite their widespread presence, cats faced unique challenges in finding rescues and support. There were twice as many cats in the shelters, with a less than 10% chance of them making it out. A staggering statistic compared that to dogs in our shelter systems. I was not experienced with cats, nor was I a 'cat person' but an unexpected event led me to take in two kittens and the process of fostering these kittens turned me into a forever 'cat person'. Inspired by the love for all animals, I decided to broaden the organization's scope and extend a paw to our feline friends.

Facing the Challenges:
The decision to expand the rescue's focus from dogs to cats was not without its challenges. Cats, often overlooked in the rescue world, presented a different set of needs and demands. Limited resources and a lack of attention to feline welfare posed hurdles, but Boomer's Buddies Rescue remained undeterred. Fundraising for cats, was proving to be more difficult, and adoption events we were once invited to with pups that needed homes, now told us that only dogs were welcome to the adoption events.

Building Partnerships:
Recognizing the importance of collaboration, I actively sought partnerships with other animal welfare organizations, veterinarians, and the community. By fostering alliances and raising awareness about the unique challenges faced by cats, I aimed to build a network that would collectively work towards improving the lives of these often-neglected creatures.

Expanding Resources:
With a newfound commitment to feline welfare, the non-profit animal rescue embarked on fundraising initiatives specifically aimed at supporting the needs of cats. These efforts included campaigns to establish additional spay & neuter resources to curb the stray cat population, provide veterinary care, and promote responsible cat ownership. The community responded positively, rallying behind the cause and contributing to the transformation of the organization, while we also helped our canine companions, along with farm animals and other types of critters.

Success Stories:
The transition from a canine-centric rescue to an inclusive haven for both dogs and cats yielded heartwarming success stories not just with feline adoptions, but also by showing the unique personalities of cats, and how cats and dogs can not only just get along, but can become the best of friends!
